The last class in this semester

On July 17th, we had the last class in this semester. How fast time has passed!

In the class, we threw a surprise party for Tatsuya and Miyako because July 22 is Tatsuya’s birthday and Miyako will leave Japan for studying abroad from August.

So, we gave a photo-album and a picture frame for them. They looked really happy and surprised! We also ate a delicious cake! We had a great and special time!

After that, we moved on to the project meeting of free paper “I”. Firstly, we shared new ideas with each other which could be the main topic of the free paper. All ideas were interesting and attractive, so we could not decide the best one in the class. So, group B will discuss these ideas later and make a decision.
Then, we discussed regarding support money from companies. There were many things we had to decide, but the discussion was tough because it is related to money.

Actually, we have faced many problems because this is the first time for us to make a free paper. We will keep going to make effort to make the wonderful free paper.

Anyway, it was the last class for Miyako, she will be back September 2016 though. We will miss her soon, but we are looking forward to her coming back with much confidence.

I wrote this article on July 22 on which the exam week started! Summer vacation is almost here! Don’t fall your class! Also, don’t miss the updated information on our Facebook and Twitter! We took new pictures for our webpage, so please follow us and check them out!

Project meeting and Lecture from members from "Iki"

On July 10th, we held a meeting about our big project, free paper “I.” During the class time, we first gave a progress report on each group’s work. Then, we discussed what we had to do within the spring semester, and finally decided the goals we should achieve for this semester. We did not have any idea how to create free paper, but as we have hold meetings many times, we gradually know what to do in order to carry on this project.

After the seminar class, we met some members of free paper “Iki” during lunch time. Iki is a traditional free paper in areas near Nagoya University and Nanzan University, that has been created by the students of these students. Their experience of how they have created "Iki" helps us a lot. Thank you!

They said that the latest “Iki” would be coming soon. Don’t miss it!

In the spring semester, only 1 week is left! How fast days have gone! There are still many problems we have to solve, but we have enjoyed every seminar class and our project!

Check our project and follow us please!!!

Feedback on Research Paper

On July 3rd, we had 13th seminar class. The end of spring semester is approaching, and we are starting to write a research paper. This week, we gave feedback on our drafts of the research paper to each other.

We had read Misaki, Shiori, Miho, Haruka Ikuta, and Miyu’s drafts and wrote some comments in feedback sheets before the class. In the class, by exchanging the comments based on the sheet, we realized what we should improve in our paper. In addition, we reconfirmed some rules of academic writing. We could learn a lot to improve our ideas and academic writing skills from this class. All of them will help us make our research papers much better.

After the discussion about research papers, we discussed some important things to carry out the project to establish free paper "I." Creating and publishing free paper is not easy, so there are some troubles that we have to address. We will continue to make efforts!

In this semester, there are only 2 weeks left!  We will keep trying to improve our research papers and proceed with the project to create free paper "I". Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and check them out!

Project meeting

   Project meeting
The time flies so fast and July is coming!! How are you doing? The weather is getting hot and humid, but we have little rain this year. Please take care for your health in these hot days!!

It has been 12 weeks since we started learning together in imai seminar. Since all of the presentation finished, we used whole class for project meeting. This week, we discussed each group's idea based on a rough draft of a proposal.

Through exchanging opinions with each other, we tried to make them better to complete the proposal by next week. As we mentioned before, there are three groups in terms of contents of the free paper such as A) communication research, B) information of Nanzan University and C) culture. After discussing in class, we had a time to rethink our own ideas in each group.

In group A, members will send out questionnaires and give opportunities to consult. Also, they will analyze them based on communication theory in an understandable way. You may notice how interesting communication studies are!!

In group B, members will write information about Nanzan University. For example, they will make a calendar which has schedules of events in fall semester. In addition, lots of information related to international exchanges that you may not know will be introduced. If you know more about Nanzan by reading these contents, your school lives can be more fulfilling!!

In group C, members will introduce students’ activities on imai seminar, the meaning of the title of free paper “I” and amusements related to communication. All of them will catch the eyes of you, and you may get interested in imai seminar and communication studies!

As you can see, we always make effort to fulfill our quest. Our project meeting will carry on to create free paper "I". Don't miss it!!!

Presentation about “conflict” and project meeting

In this semester, we already have had 11th weeks. We have only 4 weeks until  the summer vacation. This week, we had the final presentation whose theme was conflict. The presenters were Yuri and Natsumi. “Have you ever suffered from conflicts?” This question opened the presentation. The presenters mainly divided this topic into two parts, the background and ending of conflict. They used some pictures in the powerpoint slides. Moreover, Yuri showed us a short movie which described some types of conflicts. If you are interested in the movie, check out this URL and think how many types of conflicts there are.

After the presentation, some questions are asked to the presenters. The quality of our questions were much much better than that of previous ones! These questions made us consider the theory of conflict deeply.

As usual, we had project meeting after the presentation. Each group has their own ideas of our project and we gave some advice to each other. We will improve the ideas based the advice and our first goal is to make a plan to create our free paper before summer vacation.

In addition, our seminar’s official twitter and facebook are established in this week. You are interested in how we create the free paper, aren’t you? If you follow these accounts, you can get the newest information about the free paper, “I”. Why don’t you check them out?

Chance to think about love and our project meeting

On June 12th, we had 10th seminar class. I guess the strength of our seminar is a homey atmosphere. Sometimes we do our class with door opened or discuss some topic while playing music. It makes us feel relaxed and our project and discussion go smoothly and actively.

This week, our presentation topic was love which is probably the most interesting theme for us. A presentation made by Haruka (Ikuta) and Miho was fabulous.

They introduced there types of love using the triangular theory which is consisted of three elements such as intimacy, passion and commitment.

Finally, they concluded their presentation with the eternal theme “Does love last?” If you really want to know the answer now, why don’t you join our seminar and study together?

In the latter half of the class, we proceeded our project meeting. First, we divided members into three groups in terms of the management of the project such as 1) seeking support money, 2) free paper design, and 3) accounting/advertisement. Second, all the members were divided into another three groups in terms of contents of the free paper such as 1) communication research, 2) information of Nanzan University, and 3) culture. At the end of the class, we selected our project leader, Misaki, and reexamined the further schedule.

In our seminar, we take turn doing presenters and facilitators. So, it is a good opportunity to watch other’s presentation and to be a discussion leader. I can say that we are learning various things through this seminar every week.

Presentation and project meeting

These days, it becomes warm. However, rainy season is also coming. This week, we had a presentation and project meeting as usual.

Miyako and Risa gave us fantastic presentation. The topic was friendship. Friendship is one of the most important elements in our life, so it was very interesting for us. Slides they made were very easy to understand. At the beginning of this presentation, there was a question, “What is friendship?” This presentation gave us opportunities to think about it. We really enjoyed listening their presentations. Then, there was an interesting discussion question, so I would like to introduce. It was the question such as “what should you do if you love the parson your friend loves?” This Yuri’s question excited us. It’s very complicated question, isn’t it?

After the presentation and question time, we had a project meeting. So far, we have decided purpose, title and subtitle of free paper. Misaki, Miyu and Shiori facilitated our meeting this week. This time, we decided the contents of free paper. We could share many good ideas. Most of contents we shared was connected with our university life or communication.

In conclusion, this class gave us many opportunities thinking about communication. Sometimes, we are surprised at the facts we didn’t know. These activities such as presentation and project meeting are very profitable. I’m looking forward to creating free paper.

3rd presentation and project meeting

As usual, we did a reading presentation and a project meeting in the class. It has been 8 weeks since the seminar started. We gradually get used to the new school life and the class gets more and more exciting.

This week’s presenters were Yuki and Haruka Mizuno. They gave a presentation on interdependency. This chapter was a little complicated, so many members had difficulties understanding the whole content. However, because these two made a fantastic presentation, we could understand about interdependency more deeply.

First, Yuki talked about social exchange, four types of relationships and the economies of relationship. Then, Haruka explained the nature of interdependency and commitment. They used some visual aids and examples which made their presentation easier to understand. From the presentation, we learned that we can make choices for our good relationship and we should be thoughtful and committed for the good and continued relationship. Afterwards, we asked questions to the presenters and there were many interesting questions and opinions.
After the presentation, we had a project meeting. Yuri and Natsumi held the meeting well by using facilitation skills. Today, we decided the title and subtitle of the free paper. Each of us was thinking about them in advance. There were many good ideas and we made the best title and subtitle.

We also used a half of lunch time after the class to decide the schedule of the future. We hope to issue the first free paper in November and distribute them during the school festival. It seems that there is not much time left but we will do our best and we are all excited.

In conclusion, every week we learn a lot from the text book. I will do my presentation with Risa on friendship next week. I am nervous but I would like to make a great presentation as others did. Also, there was a great news that more than 130 people have watched this blog so far! We all would like to thank you and promise to keep writing an interesting blog. Please enjoy and look forward to the next ones!

Presentation and project meeting

We learned new things this week from an interesting presentation and also discussed about project meeting.

Haruka and Yuuki made a presentation on two types of communication: nonverbal communication and verbal communication. When we have conversation with someone, we sometimes have interpersonal gaps. The presenters suggested that it is critical to know how to make better conversation to close the gaps by using nonverbal and verbal communication, which are essential in our daily lives. Since the presenters used many gestures, pictures, and graphs, the presentation was really easy to understand and we all enjoyed listening to their great presentation.

Then, we asked discussion questions to the presenters. Many of us asked them a question related to the differences between man and woman and some asked them about friend relationships, self-disclosure, interpersonal distance, miscommunication, etc. Not only the presenters expressed their opinion, but also the listeners expressed their comments.

After finishing the presentation and discussion, we had a meeting to discuss our seminar  project that is to make free papers for Nanzan students. This week’s topic was to decide a purpose of creating free papers. Facilitators were Haruka and Miho. First of all, each of us proposed purposes which we had considered in advance. After all members expressed their opinions, we categorized them into five groups and discussed advantages and disadvantages of each goal. Consequently, we put five purposes all together and have decided the overall purpose: Rediscover the good points of Nanzan University through introducing about “Nanzan” including about the systems, seminars, clubs, etc. therefoe, we aim to help improving percentage of attendance and job hunting.

In conclusion, since learning about communication in detail makes me think about relationships among friends, family, etc, I would like to make good use of communication skills that I learnt for in my daily life. Also, I hope to do my best to create free papers with my friends in seminar.

Reading presentation and project meating

6 weeks have passed since we started working together as Imai seminar. In the past 5 weeks, we have studied several things such as the basis of communication, facilitation skills, and English presentation skills. From this week, we have started a new activity called reading presentation besides the seminar project meeting by using the skills which we have already learned.

First, the class started with a reading presentation.  From this week, a couple of members make a presentation on a summary of each chapter of a textbook in front the class in each week. The first presenters were Misaki, Shiori, and Miyu. They did a great presentation though this was the first English presentation in this seminar. They must have been very nervous. However, they carefully explained us about what is intimate relationship, so we can easily understand it.

After the presentation, each of us asked presenters a question related the chapter in textbook. Some questions were very deep, but presenters helped each other and carefully answered all of our questions.

The next thing we did was a project meeting. In the previous meeting, we have decided to make a free paper, so we were talking about 2 things in this week; who can be the reader of our free paper and what contents we put on the paper. This week, Miyako and Risa led our meeting as leaders by using facilitation skills. As a result of the meeting, we unanimously decided to make the free paper for university students, but couldn'tu choose its contents because we have many things that we wanted to put on it.

In conclusion, we have started a new activity called reading presentation from this week besides the seminar project meeting. Both may be a bit tough for us, but we succeeded in doing both work in this week. This experience will lead to our confidence on doing new things, and it would be very meaningful for our future.

Career decision and project meeting

This week, there were two things we did in our seminar class: career decision making and seminar project meeting.

First, we learned how to make a satisfying career decision. We are third-year students, so it is time to start thinking about job hunting. However, there are many jobs in the world, so it is very difficult for us to find the best job. Therefore, we learned about how we can be satisfied with our choices. In the case of professor Imai, he made a list of important things in choosing a job. After that, he ranked the items according to his priorities. Then, necessary things to consider become clear for working,so it is easy to make a satisfying choice.

In addition, the process of achieving a goal is important. It's necessary to think of what we have to do for the goal, and we should try to step into the field where we want to work without being afraid. The try may be a good opportunity to know different sides of the job. Also, we shouldn't act without thinking. If you can do so, you can be close to the goal. The time to start an internship is approaching, so it may be a good chance to take action.

Next, the other thing we did about project meeting. The other day ,we decided to carry out one project ,but we did not decide what to do. Therefore, we used the technique of facilitation to brainstorm project ideas. We wrote some ideas on post-its, and our facilitator integrated these ideas into one idea. As a result, we decided to make free paper. I am looking forward to completing this project.

In conclusion, we discussed career decision and seminar project this week. First, in the discussion, I learned that we can use various skills and experiences to decide on a job. After that, in the project meeting, we proposed some ideas and integrated them into one idea. I believe that both seem like different things, but they may be related to each other.
